Carpal Tunnel Surgery
The carpal tunnel is the narrow passage that runs between the wrist and the hand. The median nerve runs through the carpal tunnel.
Carpal tunnel syndrome can cause tingling, numbness, tendency to drop objects and waking up at night with pain.
With open carpal tunnel surgery an incision is made in the palm, then the transverse carpal ligament is divided, making sure the median nerve is safely out of the way. This relieves the pressure on the nerve.
There will be firm bandage covering the hand and wrist. Usually this is removed after 48 hours, and you should use the hand for light activities. Avoid heavy activities until the palm wound has healed completely.
