Post Operative Instructions
If you have been given specific instructions, depending on the type of surgery you have undergone, please follow them.
Below are general instructions, not specific to the type of surgery undergone.
- Take pain relieving and other medications as advised. It is easier to prevent pain developing than to manage it once it has developed.
- Do not drive a vehicle, operate machinery, or sign legal documents until the effects of the sedative / anaesthesia has worn off. This may last for 24 hours after the surgery.
- Dressings may be removed after 5 days (unless otherwise instructed). It is normal for a small amount of blood to be visible under the dressing, and the dressing should be left intact.
- Keep the dressings clean and dry.
- For skin graft procedures and Pilonidal sinus surgery, the dressings may need to be left longer untouched – please follow the specific instructions given.
- Avoid strenuous activity as advised. Rest for a few days after surgery, but it is important to keep moving and mobile.
- If you experience new or worrying symptoms, it is better to see your doctor early. Please contact Dr Jayasundera’s office or see your GP.
- Schedule your follow up appointment with Dr Jayasundera as advised. usually in 2-3 weeks. Please ring the office early (soon after discharge) to make this appointment.
Please consult your doctor immediately if you develop any of these symptoms:
- Increased redness around the wound
- Increasing swelling under the wound
- A foul odour
- A high fever (over 38 C)
- Sudden calf pain and swelling or shortness of breath
- Chest pain
